Background of the Study
Youth participation in political processes is crucial for ensuring the long-term sustainability of democratic governance. In Nigeria, the youth demographic is both large and politically significant, yet their engagement in electoral activities, particularly in local elections, is often limited (Mustapha & Saleh, 2024). Gwarzo Local Government Area (LGA) in Kano State is home to a significant youth population, but political apathy and a lack of political education have hindered their active participation in elections (Ahmed & Jibrin, 2023). Factors such as unemployment, political violence, and a lack of access to decision-making platforms contribute to youth disengagement from electoral processes (Jibrin & Abubakar, 2023). This study aims to assess the extent of youth participation in political elections in Gwarzo LGA, exploring the motivations behind youth engagement or apathy, as well as the barriers preventing them from being more involved. The research will also investigate the role of political parties, civil society organizations, and government policies in encouraging youth participation in the electoral process.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the large proportion of youth in Gwarzo LGA, their participation in political elections remains relatively low. This is concerning given the importance of youth involvement in shaping the future of Nigerian politics. The study will examine why youth are often disengaged from the political process and what strategies can be used to increase their participation in elections in Gwarzo.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the level of youth participation in political elections in Gwarzo LGA.
To identify the factors that contribute to youth disengagement from electoral processes in Gwarzo.
To assess the effectiveness of strategies aimed at increasing youth participation in elections in Gwarzo.
1.4 Research Questions
What is the level of youth participation in political elections in Gwarzo LGA?
What are the main factors that discourage youth participation in elections in Gwarzo?
How effective are existing initiatives in promoting youth participation in elections in Gwarzo LGA?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
Youth participation in political elections in Gwarzo LGA is significantly lower than that of other demographics.
Factors such as unemployment and political violence significantly contribute to youth disengagement from electoral processes in Gwarzo.
Strategies aimed at improving political education and engagement have a positive impact on youth participation in elections in Gwarzo LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the factors influencing youth participation in political elections, particularly in rural and semi-urban Nigerian settings like Gwarzo. The findings will help policymakers, political parties, and civil society organizations to design more effective programs and policies aimed at engaging young people in the democratic process.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus specifically on youth participation in political elections in Gwarzo LGA, Kano State. The research will be limited to registered youth voters within the local government and will not include other regions of Kano State or focus on youth engagement in other political activities outside elections. A limitation of the study may include potential biases in youth responses, especially if they feel their participation might be influenced by external factors.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Youth Participation: The active involvement of young people in the electoral process, including voting, candidacy, and political activism.
Political Apathy: A lack of interest, enthusiasm, or engagement in the political process, often resulting in low participation.
Political Education: The process of providing individuals, especially youth, with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and engage in the political process.
